Public Relations Professionals Receive Awards

Jill Thomas Sluss, Megan Semmelman, and Patti Lucas Styles have received prestigious awards from their chapters of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

Jill and Megan, both initiates of Pi Epsilon/Roanoke College, received Summit Awards from the PRSA, Blue Ridge Chapter in Virginia. The awards honor excellence in the field of public relations.

Jill is employed as the promotions director of radio station WSLQ-Q99FM and won because of the station’s public-service project, which invites listeners to donate school supplies for distribution to underprivileged children in Roanoke County schools. Megan, the only student to receive an award, won for her public relations portfolio. She has been employed by the Roanoke College Public Relations Office since the summer of 2009.

Patti, an initiate of Lambda Delta/Kent State U, received the Luminary Star Award from the PRSA, Georgia Chapter. The award recognizes a chapter member of 13–19 years who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and made contributions to the profession of public relations through work experience. In 2000, she received the Rising Star Award, which goes to a member with five years or less experience. For PRSA|GA, Patti served on the Professional Development Committee, which she chaired for two years, and oversaw a web-writing seminar that was one of the chapter's most successful. She later served on the strategic plan, website, and nominating committees, and co-chaired the 2009 annual conference.

Employed by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, during her six years on staff Patti has helped guide employees and physicians through major changes in the ways medical data is stored, exchanged, accessed, and used. Those efforts earned her a Phoenix Award from PRSA/Georgia in 2008, honoring her exemplary work. She was similarily honored in 2009 for an internal video she produced, “What Not to Healthcare,” which focused on patient scheduling and registration, and hospital and professional billing.
